Sitting With The Ugly Makes It Pretty
Inner Diva Dilemma:
Do you ever find yourself completely stuck about something in your business? You want to move forward, but you can't see how or you can't get yourself to take the steps that you've laid out. It's your tendency to get down on yourself for this, to call yourself a procrastinator or lazy. But that's really painful because even though you haven't made headway, you've really been wanting to, you just haven't been able to make it happen.
What There Is For You To Know:
Right off the bat, I'm going to tell you to shelve the "procrastinator" and "lazy" accusations. Being a go-getting and passionately-driven woman, when you're stuck about something, it's not because you are unwilling to take action or being lazy. If anything, you err on the side of taking too much action, so when you're stuck for forward movement, there is something else going on...
Shrek And The Frog Prince:
There is an archetypal fairy tale that has repeated itself in different forms over the generations because its core message hits home in a profound way. It started out as The Frog Prince and modern-day movies like Shrek and most recently a movie called Penelope have used the same storyline. We all know how it goes - one of the lead characters is resisting another lead character because he/she is ugly in appearance. But once accepted exactly as-is, the "ugly" character turns into something beautiful and exactly the key to forward movement for all of the characters in the story.
You can use this same principle when you're stuck in your business. When forward movement is eluding you, instead of beating yourself up for it, start looking for the "ugly" thing that you think you should be avoiding. For instance, once I was stalled out in my business and not able to motivate forward. When I dug in to recognize the "ugly", I found that I was recoiling from the fact that what I really truly wanted was to spend some time fixing up the new apartment I had just moved into. The thought process went something like this: "NO! I can't spend time fixing up my apartment when there is so much to do in my business. In fact, that's the last thing I should be doing right now!"
Truth is, recoiling from my true need in the moment was keeping me from the forward movement I wanted. What's more, I was seeing that true need as ugly and in the way. But you can probably guess the rest - when I let myself accept what was really going on and give into it, I did some work on my apartment for one business day and as a result felt much more grounded and centered. The next day I was rarin' to go with the action steps I was trying to artificially push myself to take the day before. The "ugly" and bothersome need had transformed into the magic gateway for forward movement.
Try It On The Fly:
This week, if you find yourself stalled out about anything in your business, take a moment to reflect and notice what it is that you're recoiling against - the thing that you would rather be doing right now, but think you shouldn't be. Then, as an experiment, give in to it and see what happens. No matter how frivolous it seems, let yourself do the thing you really want to do. Then watch to see what affect this acceptance has on your overall forward movement.
