Sidestepping Second-Guessing
Inner Diva Dilemma:
As an entrepreneur, you have to make little and big business decisions all day every day. It's fun to be at the helm of your business, but it can also be really tiring. Sometimes you wish you could pawn the decisions off on someone else, but when it comes down to it, you're the one who needs to make them. It sure would be nice to have a break, though...
What There Is For You To Know:
As a smart and spirited entrepreneurial woman, you have a sharp mind that can oftentimes feel like a hamster wheel going a mile a minute. Your active brain is an excellent asset in your business and it can be the source of a hidden drain in your decision-making process: second-guessing. If you can give yourself any kind of break from second-guessing, you can tremendously reduce the decision-making drain.
American Gladiators Of The Brain:
Second-guessing is like having a wrestling match in your head. Your sharp, active brain is particularly prone to second-guessing because it's got muscles and wants to use them. So when it's time to make a decision, you start with your initial sense of the choice you'd like to make, then your brain likes to go to the mat and wrestle: "But what if that's the wrong choice...what about this choice over here...no, I'm going with the first choice...but what if it's not the right choice..."
Drain-o-rama! And when this happens multiple times throughout the day, well, you can see how the expenditure of energy begins to add up. It's not that you're doing anything wrong, and your brain is not the enemy - it's just using decision-making as an opportunity to flex its bad-ass muscles.
Try It On The Fly:
The opposite of brain wrestling is that familiar phrase "go with your gut". It's just one example of the many ways to make a decision that bypasses the gladiator ring. This week, when you find yourself engaging in a wrestling match, go for the decision from your gut instinct instead. Ask yourself, "What's my gut instinct here?" And then just go with it (watch out - you'll probably be tempted to second-guess it). Notice how the elimination of the wrestling match saves you a whole load of energy.
Tips For Troubleshooting:
This week's experiment is not to say that you must always refrain from using your head and instead always use your gut when making decisions. What we're doing here is looking for any place in your day when it really is simpler and clearer to just go with your gut. When you start to look for opportunities, you'll find them. And even if you find just one or two, that's some energy that you've saved from engaging in an unnecessary wrestling match.
